Educational Audiology: Supporting Students

Educational audiologists play a crucial role in facilitating communication access for students with hearing differences. They work collaboratively with schools to assess the auditory needs of students, ensuring that each child has the necessary support to thrive academically. By evaluating the impact of hearing on language and communication, educational audiologists provide essential data that informs intervention planning and compliance with communication standards.

These professionals also offer recommendations to optimize learning environments, tailoring strategies to enhance auditory access in various educational settings. Their expertise ensures that students receive the appropriate accommodations and resources, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere. Through ongoing collaboration with educators, educational audiologists help create a foundation for academic success and personal growth for students with hearing challenges.

Monitoring Progress and Development

Annual Evaluations: Tracking Growth

Annual evaluations are essential for monitoring the skill development and progress of students with hearing differences. These assessments provide valuable insights into a student’s auditory and language growth, guiding educational strategies and interventions. By regularly reviewing each student’s progress, educational audiologists can adjust recommendations and support plans to meet evolving needs, ensuring that students continue to achieve their full potential.

Discover the WISE Mobile Resource for Kids

What is it?

The Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language

Education (WISE) Mobile Resource for Kids is an innovative solution to provide audiology and speech therapy services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing in Alabama.

This 36-foot mobile clinic is outfitted with equipment for our team of pediatric audiologists, Listening and Spoken Language Specialists/Certified Auditory Verbal Therapists (LSLS-Cert. AVTs), and family educators to travel across the state to provide newborn hearing screening follow-up, audiological services, speech therapy, school/ daycare screenings, and family education.

Why is it Needed?

Many of Alabama’s families with infants and children who are deaf or hard of hearing live in rural areas where audiology and therapy resources are difficult to access. This makes it harder for children to receive appropriate and critical intervention. Late diagnosis puts children behind and limits their future. The WISE Mobile Resource for Kids provides greater access to family-centered, community-based, coordinated care for children and their families.

The goals for this program:

  • help families in underserved areas overcome barriers to receiving care
  • increase likelihood of timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention
  • strengthen families
  • expand community awareness
  • improve outcomes for children in Alabama

Who will it Serve?

The WISE MRKS truck is dedicated to serving children of all ages across Alabama, with a special focus on those living in rural and underserved areas. To ensure that children who might otherwise face barriers to care—due to geographic or socioeconomic challenges—have access to vital audiology services. By reaching communities with limited resources, the truck provides a lifeline for families seeking support for their children’s hearing and communication needs.

We are empowering children to thrive in their home communities by prioritizing access to essential audiology services, no matter where they live. Our goal is to provide children with the tools and support they need to succeed academically, socially, and personally within their everyday environments.By focusing on early intervention and ongoing care, we help children build strong communication skills and foster meaningful connections with their families and peers. This approach ensures that children not only overcome challenges but also achieve their full potential right in the heart of their communities.
